Questions

How many trucking companies lose their authority each month?

1,292 companies had operating authority suspended or revoked in September 2026, after 2,967 in August 2026 and 2,525 in July 2026.

Why does FMCSA suspend operating authority?

Most often because the carrier’s insurance filing was cancelled and nothing replaced it: 96.1% of cases in September 2026. A lapsed process agent (BOC-3) filing is the other common reason.

Can a carrier get its authority back?

Yes. 4,171 companies were reinstated in September 2026. Reinstatement needs the required insurance and process agent filings back on record.

How do I check whether a carrier’s authority is active?

Look the carrier up by USDOT or MC number. The MC number lookup shows each authority, its status and the date of the last change.
