What a DOT number search shows
One result for the carrier, with the date FMCSA published each part.
Company
Legal name, DBA, business address and phone as the carrier reported them. Compare them with the carrier packet.
USDOT status
Active or inactive in the census, and any out-of-service order.
Operating authority
Every MC docket linked to the USDOT number, the authority type, its status and its history of grants, suspensions and revocations.

The BIPD liability filing on record and the amount required for that carrier.

Reported power units and drivers, and the date of the last MCS-150 update.

Find a USDOT number by company name

When many companies share a name, add another word from the legal name, or a comma and the state: Acme Freight, TX. Looking for your own DOT number works the same way.
Where to find a DOT number
On the carrier’s trucks: every self-propelled commercial motor vehicle must show the carrier’s name and its number, after the letters “USDOT”, on both sides (49 CFR 390.21T). It is also on the carrier’s registration and authority papers, or search the company name above.
Check or verify a DOT number’s status
- Enter the USDOT number from the truck, the carrier packet or the rate confirmation.
- Read the USDOT status. Active means the registration is current. Inactive usually means the biennial MCS-150 update was missed (49 CFR 390.19). An out-of-service order means the carrier may not operate.
- Read the authority status on its own line. A carrier hauling for hire across state lines needs active operating authority as well as an active USDOT number.
- Check the insurance filing and safety record in the same result.
Questions
Is a DOT number the same as a USDOT number?
Yes. FMCSA calls it the USDOT Number; most people say DOT number.
Is the DOT number lookup free?

Can I look up a DOT number by company name?

How do I find my own DOT number?
Search your company’s legal name. Your USDOT number is on the matching row, and the record shows what FMCSA currently has on file for you.
Where does the data come from?
From FMCSA’s public census, authority, insurance and safety datasets. Each value shows the date of the dataset it came from. The official record is FMCSA’s SAFER Company Snapshot.
Why can’t I find a carrier?
Check for a typing error and that the number is a USDOT number rather than an MC number, or search the company name instead. A record created in the last few days may not be in the published data yet.
