Free carrier lookup

SAFER company snapshot lookup

Look up a motor carrier’s company snapshot by USDOT number, MC number or company name: the fields of FMCSA’s SAFER Web snapshot, plus authority and insurance filings, each with the date of its source.

Free: 3 record lookups and 10 name searches a day across the lookup tools. No account needed.

Have an MC number instead? Use the MC number lookup. Want every check in one list? Try the carrier check.

What a company snapshot shows, field by field

The SAFER Company Snapshot brings together the carrier’s registration, authority and safety records. Here is what each part means for a broker, and where CarrierTrail shows it.

Entity type and operating status

Whether the USDOT record is a carrier, broker, shipper or several, and whether it is active in the census. Inactive census status and revoked authority are two different things; check both.

USDOT and MC or docket numbers

The USDOT number identifies the company. Docket numbers (MC, FF or MX) identify operating authority. One company can hold several dockets.

Legal name, DBA, address and phone

As the carrier reported them on its MCS-150. Compare them with the carrier packet, and treat a recent change as a reason to confirm by a second channel.

Power units and drivers

Self-reported fleet size from the MCS-150. It shows scale. It does not tell you how many trucks are free for your load.

MCS-150 form date

When the carrier last updated its registration. The update is due every two years, so an old date is worth asking about.

Operation classification and cargo carried

For-hire or private, interstate or intrastate, and the cargo classes the carrier declared. Match them to your freight.

Inspections and out-of-service rates

Roadside inspections over the last 24 months and the share that ended in an out-of-service order, for drivers and vehicles.

Crashes

Reportable crashes over the last 24 months, split into fatal, injury and tow-away. Crash involvement does not establish fault.

Safety rating

Satisfactory, Conditional, Unsatisfactory or not rated, with the date of the review. Most carriers have never been rated.

SAFER snapshot or CarrierTrail profile?

SAFER Company Snapshot

  • The official FMCSA record, free and public.
  • Today’s values only; earlier values are not shown.
  • One carrier at a time, nothing saved.

CarrierTrail profile and workspace

  • Dated history: authority timeline, suspension notices and census field changes.
  • Shared contacts: how many other carriers report the same phone or address.
  • Monitoring: saved carriers are re-checked daily and changes are queued for review.

Questions

Is the snapshot lookup free?

Yes. Three lookups a day are free without an account, across all CarrierTrail lookup tools and directories.

Why might a value differ from SAFER?

Each FMCSA dataset is published on its own schedule. CarrierTrail shows the publication date next to every value; if SAFER shows a newer value, the official record wins.

Can I search by company name?

Yes. Type the company name in the search box and pick the carrier from the matches. A USDOT or MC number goes straight to the snapshot.

Is this the official SAFER website?

No. CarrierTrail is independent and uses FMCSA’s public data. The official SAFER Company Snapshot is at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov.

Watch carriers after the snapshot

A snapshot is one moment. Save carriers to a watchlist and CarrierTrail re-checks them daily, with your team’s notes kept alongside.
