Safety rating, inspections and crashes are shown separately
A census safety rating, an inspection result, an out-of-service count and a crash record describe different things. CarrierTrail presents each measure on its own, with its source window, and adds no score of its own.
Out-of-service rates with their counts
Driver and vehicle out-of-service rates show both the event count and the relevant inspection count. When there are no inspections to divide by, CarrierTrail marks the rate unavailable instead of displaying a misleading zero percent.
DOT violations and crashes in context
The summary includes violation totals, the most frequent published violation codes and fatal, injury and tow-away crash counts for the 24-month window. Crash involvement does not establish fault. These records support your review, and the approval decision stays with your team.
Built on the public FMCSA safety files
CarrierTrail imports the official public monthly SMS input files and records their date range. Saved review records preserve the public summary that was available when your team made a decision.
Example: reading a carrier’s safety record before a load
Enter the carrier’s USDOT number or company name in the box above. The record shows, each with its dates:
- the FMCSA safety rating (Satisfactory, Conditional, Unsatisfactory or not rated) and the rating date,
- roadside inspections in the 24-month window, with driver and vehicle out-of-service rates and the counts behind them,
- violations: the total and the most frequent published violation codes, and
- crashes: fatal, injury and tow-away counts.
In a workspace the same summary is saved with each decision, and a changed safety rating on a watched carrier goes to your review queue.
Questions brokers ask
How do I look up a carrier’s DOT safety rating?
Enter its USDOT number or company name in the box on this page. The record shows the FMCSA safety rating with the inspection, violation and crash data that sits beside it.
Is there one DOT safety score for a carrier?
The public record has a safety rating plus separate inspection, violation and crash data. CarrierTrail shows each with its counts and dates and adds no score of its own.
Can I see a carrier’s CSA score?
For property carriers, FMCSA shows BASIC percentiles only to the carrier and to enforcement. What is public, and shown here, is the safety rating, inspections, out-of-service rates, violations and crashes.
How far back does the safety record go?
Inspections, violations and crashes cover the 24-month window in FMCSA’s monthly public files. The record shows the exact date range.
Is the safety lookup free?
Yes: 3 record lookups and 10 name searches a day, with no account. Saved reviews and daily monitoring are part of the paid plans.
